Reflections on My SEA-Teacher Practicum Experience:
Growth, Challenges, and Cultural Insights

The purpose of the practicum is to enhance our teaching skills and pedagogy, improve our English proficiency, and expose us to diverse teaching and learning experiences. Joining this program fully met our needs, as it provided us with a platform to develop both professionally and personally. The program’s objectives were achieved, and it allowed us to accomplish what we aimed for in this practicum experience.

During my practicum, I actively participated in the daily routines of the school, which included preparing and delivering lessons, assisting in classroom activities, and collaborating with local teachers. I also had the opportunity to observe the teaching methods used by experienced educators, which allowed me to adapt and improve my own teaching style. Additionally, I engaged with students in a variety of ways, including one-on-one interactions, group activities, and classroom management. This hands-on involvement in different aspects of school life helped me build a deeper understanding of diverse teaching methods and how to cater to various student needs.

The outcomes of this practicum were incredibly valuable. I gained an in-depth understanding of various teaching strategies and techniques, especially in handling students with special needs. The experience also taught me the importance of being flexible and adaptive in the classroom, as every student has unique learning needs. Beyond academic lessons, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture, which significantly enriched my experience. I learned about the local traditions, customs, and the importance of cultural sensitivity in education. These insights not only expanded my teaching perspective but also broadened my worldview, giving me the ability to approach education from a global standpoint. Additionally, I built meaningful relationships with local teachers and students, and the memories of this cultural exchange will remain with me forever.

One of the main challenges I faced during the practicum was the language barrier. Most of the students and teachers spoke Thai, and initially, I found it difficult to communicate effectively. However, the school made an effort to help us overcome this challenge. Teachers who spoke English assisted in translating and facilitating communication, and I also relied on translator apps like Google Translate to help bridge the gap. While the language barrier presented some challenges, it was manageable, and I found alternative ways to communicate with the students through the teacher, using these apps and simple English. This experience also taught me the importance of patience and creativity in communication, allowing me to better connect with students despite the language differences.
